As you may know, DC has a wealth of groups and people fighting against the antidemocratic excesses of this moment—and the work of several is directly related to DC public education:
Defend DC Public Education: This group (an offshoot of EmpowerEd) provides immigration guidance and practical advice against federal threats. It also sends out an excellent weekly digest of threats to public education and organizes school community helpers. Sign up for the digest and more information here: https://www.weareempowered.org/defenddceducation.html
Fair Budget Coalition: This coalition of DC groups and individuals devoted to justice and equity has a section on education—and every Friday sends out a newsletter of action items to ensure a fair and just DC budget: https://fairbudget.org
Washington Teachers Union protection for international educators: If you are associated with DCPS, be sure to have your local LSAT sign on to this WTU letter to ensure international educators in DCPS have a path to obtaining green cards (NB: despite the deadline in this sign-on letter, this campaign is still ongoing): https://wtu.sharepoint.com/:w:/s/Committees/IQCOhN3LcN3gTpHxawpUJr3rAXgg8FNbhaNY8_XCAHACcvw?rtime=fs6V9Sdo3kg
(Also, be sure to leave a note here if you know about more organizations and efforts around protecting education in DC.)
Finally, if you do not yet know about Free DC, now is a great time to learn more. Importantly, Free DC is partnering with the Amica Center for a free program on February 26 at 6 pm to learn about your rights and how to protect your communities. For more information and to register, see the helpful announcement from the good folks at Advocates for Justice and Education.
